Josh Martin Turns Up for the Stud Event and Wins It
Ten players, the biggest WSOP field yet, and the man who took it had never played one before.
Ten players sat down for 7 Card Stud, the biggest field the series has drawn, and Josh Martin won it in the first World Series of Parker event he has ever entered. Four knockouts, three hours and eighteen minutes, and $120.
Charlie Drotar was second for $75, his second cash in two WSOP starts, and Eric Denny third for $50.
Stud is the game furthest from what this group plays every other week: no community cards, no blinds, seven cards each and four of them face up. Reading the board is the whole discipline, and it took the newcomer to do it best.

The undercard
Greg Howell bubbled in fourth with two knockouts — a third straight event in which he has done a great deal of the eliminating. Andrew Shier was fifth and Lee Ugarte sixth.
Mike Short was the first player out after an hour and twenty-seven minutes. Jeff Holderman and Mike Conner played their first WSOP events and finished ninth and eighth.
The bigger picture
Three events, three different winners, three different games. The fields have grown each time — six, then eight, now ten — and the pool with them, from $145 to $245.
Eric Denny and Greg Howell are the only players to have cashed twice. The series breaks now until January, when the format changes again: the fourth event is a heads-up tournament.
