The Annual · 10th Denny Poker Tournament

Joe Johnson Wins a Third Annual, for $955

The tenth edition put up a prize pool nearly two and a half times bigger than any before it. First place alone paid more than eight of the nine previous pools.

The tenth Annual Denny Poker Tournament was played for $2,520, which is more than the 2011 and 2014 tournaments put together and by a distance the most this event has ever been worth. Joe Johnson won it in nine hours and twelve minutes for $955 — his third Annual, and the first time anybody has won three.

His other two were 2008 and 2009, back to back. Seven years later he made five knockouts, took out the men who finished second, third and fifth, and closed it in a fifteen-minute heads-up match.

Paul Coffman was second for $580, three weeks after winning the Canterberry Poker League. He made five knockouts of his own. That is two years running the newly crowned champion has come here and reached the last two — Josh Reel won it in 2015 — after five straight years in which the champion managed one cash between them.

Eric Denny took third and $380 with six knockouts, more than anyone in the room. Greg Howell was fourth for $260, Rick Mickaliger fifth for $195, and Josh Martin completed the money in sixth for $150 without a knockout all day.

The undercard

Lance Cain bubbled in seventh. Scott Dishong was the first player out and it took five hours and fifteen minutes to get him there — longer than most league tournaments run from start to finish.

Eight rebuys went in across the field, the first time this tournament has seen any since 2013. David Doole and Warren Mervin took two apiece and finished eleventh and sixteenth.

The bigger picture

Ten Annuals, seven different winners. Joe Johnson has three, Brian Albers two, and five others have one each.

Joe has now won this tournament in its second year, its third and its tenth. He did not enter the six in between, and he has cashed in every Annual he has ever played: a third in 2007 and three wins.

The 10th Annual Denny Poker Tournament — Saturday, April 30, 2016. 20 entrants, 8 rebuys, six paid from a $2,520 prize pool.
