Back-to-Back, and Seven of Fourteen

A month after his first win in fifteen months of trying, Eric Denny takes out half the field and does it again.

Fourteen players had to go out and Eric Denny handled seven of them — equal to the most anybody has managed in a Canterberry Poker League tournament, matching what Rick Mazza did in August. He played four hours and two minutes, closed it in eight and three-quarter minutes heads-up, and took $130, five dollars short of the season’s biggest first prize — which Mazza took in August on the same seven knockouts.

Two wins in two starts, from a man who had none in his first thirteen league tournaments.

Lee Ugarte was second for $75, back in the final two for the first time since he won the season opener in June. Mike McEvoy took third and $45 with three knockouts — three cashes now from four league nights, and still no win. Kjell Wygant played his first league tournament and finished fourth for $30, and Charlie Drotar completed the money in fifth for $20, one place better than the bubble he drew last month.

Dawn Buzbee and Tom Buzbee shared sixth, a place outside the money. Jason Baker played his first league tournament and finished twelfth with a knockout. And Rick Mazza, who set the knockout record here in August and still leads the standings, went out first after two hours and ten minutes.

The bigger picture

Five tournaments, four different winners, and the first man to win twice this season has taken the lead with it. Eric is on 61 points, fourteen clear of Mazza, having been outside the top four a month ago.

Halfway through. Ten men are inside thirty points of the lead, and the two nights just played have produced the same winner for the first time in fifteen tournaments of this league.
