Brig Coupe played his first Canterberry Poker League tournament in February and came seventeenth. On Friday, in his third, he won it — three knockouts, four hours and twenty minutes, $80.

He beat Lee Ugarte heads-up in under seven minutes. Lee took $60 for second with three knockouts of his own, and Warren Mervin was third for $45.

Lance Cain finished fourth for $30, the second cash of a fifteen-tournament career, and Eric Denny completed the money in fifth for $25 — his third cash of a season in which he played all ten.

The undercard

Duane Barone was out after nineteen minutes and twelve seconds — the quickest exit in ninety tournaments, and it takes thirteen minutes off a record that had stood since November 2015. Rick Mazza followed him after twenty-nine minutes, which would also have broken the old mark.

Steve McLean bubbled in sixth. Greg Howell finished eighth with three knockouts, as many as anyone made all night, and one of them was the man who went out second-fastest.

The bigger picture

Ten tournaments, eight different winners. David Doole and Paul Coffman won two each, and two of the eight — Josh Martin and Brig — had never won here before.

David Doole is the 2016-17 League Champion and takes the trophy on 98 points from seven starts. He came seventh on the final night, which was enough. Paul was second on 90 and Steve McLean third on 89.

He is the second man to win this league twice, after Josh Reel. Doole also took the 2011-12 title five years ago, and nine seasons have now produced seven different champions.
