Duane Barone Wins at the Seventh Attempt
Two and a half years of turning up, one cash to show for it, and then five knockouts and the whole thing.
Duane Barone first played this league in July 2008 and had never finished better than fifth. On Friday he made five knockouts, sat for four hours and twenty-two minutes and came through a fourteen-minute heads-up match for $125 — his first Canterberry Poker League win in his seventh tournament.
It is also his first cash. Seven attempts spread over two and a half years, and the one he finally converted was the one he won outright.
Kjell Wygant was second for $80 with three knockouts, which keeps a remarkable season going: six cashes from ten league tournaments and two wins. Tom Buzbee took third and $40, his first money finish since July. Dan Myers was fourth for $30, and Dawn Buzbee completed the money in fifth for $25 with two knockouts of her own.

The undercard
David Doole bubbled in sixth. Galia Heidemann played her first league tournament and finished eleventh with a knockout — and the man she sent home was Eric Denny, who went out last of the fifteen after two hours and thirteen minutes.
The bigger picture
Eight tournaments, seven different winners, and only Kjell has won twice. He is on 126 points, twenty-four clear of Lee Ugarte and thirty-five clear of Warren Mervin.
Two nights left. Kjell has cashed in six of his ten league tournaments, and but for a nineteenth place last month he has not been outside the top eleven all season.
