Eric Denny Makes It Three at Eight

The same three men who tied at seven a year ago are tied again, one win higher. And last month’s record-breaker went out first.

Eric Denny won his eighth Canterberry Poker League tournament on Friday, five knockouts and $105 from a night that ran five hours and six minutes — the longest of the season. It leaves him level with Josh Reel and Warren Mervin at the top of the all-time list.

The three of them have now done this twice. Last February, March and April they arrived at seven wins apiece in consecutive tournaments and shared the lead. Josh went to eight in June, Warren in September, and Eric has taken until now to join them.

After five hours the finish took a hundred and two seconds. Steve McLean lost it and took $65 for second, with four knockouts of his own. Josh was third for $45.

Kelly Kruegel finished fourth for $30, her tenth cash in twenty-three league tournaments and still no win. Justin Vaughn completed the money in fifth for $25 in the first league tournament he has ever played.

Rick Mickaliger bubbled in sixth. Steve Drown, who knocked out eleven players and won the whole thing five weeks ago, was the first man out this time, after an hour and twenty minutes, without a knockout to his name.

Dave Grewe put him there and made two knockouts on the night; Mike McEvoy made two as well and finished seventh.

Josh Reel leads on 169 points from seven starts, three ahead of Eric Denny, who has played all eight and has therefore filled his card — from here he can only replace his worst score. Steve McLean is third on 157 from six.
