Eric Denny Takes the All-Time Lead Alone at Twelve

Twenty-eight months since his eleventh, and it breaks a three-way tie that had held since March.

Friday, October 11, 2019 20 players $555 prize pool 5 paid

Eric Denny knocked out six of the nineteen players who had to go and won his twelfth Canterberry Poker League tournament — four hours and forty-four minutes, $225. Nobody has won twelve before.

He, Josh Reel and Warren Mervin have been tied at the top four times in five years — at seven, eight, ten and eleven. Eric has broken it, and the other two stay on eleven.

Jeff Holderman was second for $140 with four knockouts, after a twenty-five-minute heads-up match. It is the best finish of a twenty-one-tournament career and he has not won one.

Jeff Reichwein took third and $90, his fourth cash in five tournaments this season. Charlie Drotar was fourth for $60 without a knockout, and Jason Dailey completed the money in fifth for $40 having made four — the men who finished ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth, in a run.

The undercard

Juan Lopez bubbled in sixth. Lee Ugarte, who won the season opener in June, was the first player out after twenty-seven minutes and fifty-three seconds — the fourth-quickest exit this league has seen, and the second of the four that belongs to him.

David Doole went nineteenth after thirty-five minutes, so two of the twenty were gone inside forty.

The bigger picture

Five tournaments, five different winners, and none of the five had won a league tournament in the year before this season began.

Jeff Reichwein still leads on 83 points from five starts. He has cashed four times and finished fifth, fifth, fourth, sixteenth and third — a season built entirely out of not quite winning.
