Eight Deuce · Tournament #51

Joe Crashes the Party

Two tournaments into his Eight Deuce career, Joe Johnson walks in and takes the season opener.

Friday, January 9, 2026 20 players $1,380 prize pool 4 paid

New season, new year, twenty players, and a brand-new name on the board. Joe has played exactly two Eight Deuce tournaments in his life — and he has now won one of them. Joe tore through the January field with a table-leading five knockouts, played four and a half hours, and walked out with $440. Ladies and gentlemen, that is one heck of an entrance.

And do not mistake him for a beginner. Joe is a three-time winner of the Annual — he just had not gotten around to an Eight Deuce win yet. He cashed in his debut back in October, came back in January, and finished the job.

He had to climb over a wall to do it. Andrew Shier ran him all the way to the end and took $410 for second, still hunting the first Eight Deuce win of his career and never closer than this.

Third place and $340 went to Justin Vaughn, who did it the hard way with three knockouts and a seat held deep into the night. Justin has been here since Eight Deuce #1 in January 2021, and he is never far away.

Rounding out the money in fourth for $190: Josh Reel, who added a pair of knockouts of his own. Reel has two Eight Deuce wins and the 2021 Tournament of Champions behind him. Nobody wants to see him with chips.

The undercard

David Doole drew the short straw, busting fifth — one spot off the cash — after reaching for a rebuy to stay alive. Mike Conner was a menace from sixth place with three knockouts, and Rick Mazza matched him with three of his own on the way to tenth. Warren Mervin took seventh and Angela Cain eighth. Josh Maida was the first man out, lasting an hour and forty minutes before Justin ended his evening.

The bigger picture

One tournament in, so the Player of the Year table is simply the scorecard from Friday night — but it is a big first strike. Joe banks 125.00 points and a Tournament of Champions berth in the same evening. That is the rule in this league: win one, you're in. Nine more tournaments to go before the Annual, and the chase starts now.
